I was sent a really great children’s book to review called Kathryn the Grape-Just Like Magic.
It is the story about a little girl who uses her imagination to give her confidence to face everyday childhood stresses. Through the help of a magic wand and an imaginary friend, called Maggie the Butterfly, “POOF! Just Like Magic!”, Kathryn is able to cope with monsters under the bed, going to a new school, or trying out for a sport’s team.
The situations faced by Kathryn the Grape are those that we as adults can empathize with, from our own childhood experiences, but can also relate it to what our own children are currently going through. My son started a new school this year, so we talked about his experiences after we read about the same situation in the book.
My son is showing his favorite part of the book, which is where Kathryn befriends a new kid at school. The new kid just so happens to have red hair like my little guy.
I really liked the colors of the illustrations, because they were very vibrant and eye catching. I was able to keep my son’s attention as we went from page to page and he asked questions about the pictures. I also liked how the author explained that even though Kathryn used her imagination to cope with these situations, that it was actually her bravery the “magic (that) lives inside you!” that helped her to succeed.
About the Authors and the Illustrator:
Author: Kathryn Cloward
As the original Kathryn the Grape, Kathryn Cloward embraced the childhood nickname given to her by her childhood softball coach, drew on her own life experiences, and created this children’s book series that is so close to her heart. Cloward is an entrepreneurial mom who is President and sole owner of three companies: Guardian Foods, Natural Kidz and Kandon Unlimited, the parent company to Kandon Publishing and Kathryn the Grape Company.
Co-Author: Jody Duhamel
Jody Duhamel, a long time friend of Kathryn Cloward, was a natural choice as co-author of this book. Duhamel is inspired by her family and her desire to teach children of all ages that they should not allow others to define them. She feels equally as strong about giving girls a voice for self expression, and encouraging others to believe in their abilities. Through personal experience, she also shares the message that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.
Illustrator: Christine Winscott
Christine Winscott has been a commercial artist for over 25 years. Winscott is most passionate about her family, friends and the ongoing pursuit of art that makes people giggle.
